Wondering what to blog about, tweet, or otherwise share with your community this month? Ask Chipotle. Probably not your go-to place for content marketing ideas, but this month the Mexican food chain is talking about essential tremor. That’s because March is Essential Tremor Awareness Month, an initiative put on by the International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF). The theme this year is “Shine a Light on Essential Tremor,” and as an expert in neurological disease, who better than you (Chipotle notwithstanding) to help shine that light?
There are a wide variety of ways to join this campaign. Here are a few:
Share IETF’s free resources
IETF has an informative and inspirational poster you can order and put up on your waiting room wall. They also have a number of free digital resources including their awareness month logo and cover images for Facebook and Twitter. You can also insert links to their free patient information pamphlets on your website. IETF is active on Twitter and Facebook, and you can share, like, or comment on their posts all month long.
Host a Facebook Live Event
Even better than sharing IETF’s Facebook posts is to host an event on essential tremors yourself. Facebook Live broadcasts are becoming increasingly popular and according to this article, they receive six times more interaction than regular videos do. They are easy to set up and all you need is a smartphone or a webcam. You can learn more in this article, How to Broadcast a Facebook Event in 5 Easy Steps, by Techsoup.
You’ll need to advertise your event on your Facebook page at least a few days before the event. During that time it’s also a good idea to solicit questions that you can answer during your talk. For inspiration, check out the Facebook Live events run by Columbia University’s Department of Neurological Surgery.
Host a Twitter Chat
Another digital Q&A format you can use to talk about essential tremors this month is a Twitter Chat. The National Institute of Mental Health has hosted Twitter chats since 2016 and their site offers a concise and helpful description of them.
You can find more examples of health-related chats on Symplur’s Healthcare Hashtag Project, like this one on cardiac rehab, held last month. As of this writing, no Twitter chats on essential tremor are listed on their site. You can either wait and see if one comes up to participate in or set one up yourself. Here is a guide to setting up your own Twitter Chat.
Leverage all that content you have created
However you choose to participate in Essential Tremor Awareness Month, make sure you make the most of all the content you create along with it. If you run a Facebook or Twitter chat, use your blog or other social media to tell all your patients about it. Have a transcript made and make that Q&A available on your website. In raising awareness about essential tremors, you’ll also be serving as an important resource for your community.
And don’t forget to download or save this Chipotle flyer to your phone. It will remind you that awareness months can be a great opportunity to use your own voice, and if you live in Overland Park, Kansas, your burrito bowl can also do someone some good.
